I am an economist investigating how productivity is shaped by innovation, technology, and the organization of work, in the context of the US health care system. My research has studied the determinants of innovation in healthcare markets, a key engine of both rising costs and improvements in health outcomes. I analyze how the organization of provider teams affects health care efficiency. My ongoing work studies how physicians adopt and realize value from new technology, in contexts with limited information about patient-specific risks and benefits.
I completed my S.B. and Ph.D. in economics at MIT. In addition to my faculty appointment in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, I am a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. I also serve as co-editor of the Journal of Health Economics and as an associate editor of Management Science.
